In this section, we share some testimonials from select students at UTSC. They share their stories on why they are drawn to the arts and how The Music Pathways Project could have impacted their decision-making when choosing which post-secondary institution to attend for their students, and how it can impact and better equip future students when considering pathways in music.

Hey! I’m Veronica and I’m a fourth-year vocalist double majoring in Psychology and Music & Culture at UTSC. Growing up, I attended specialised art schools in Toronto where I created music every day. When the time for university applications came during the pandemic, I applied for the psychology specialist program as it was difficult to find the different arts programs. Eventually, I switched to the double major after the first semester because I needed the arts to continue being a part of my life.

Having this website as a resource would have provided me with a greater reassurance with my future during my research into different programs. I hope that with this resource, there will be more people who have a better idea of what kind of pathways they may take if they decide to pursue the arts further.

Hi, I’m Yvonne, a second-year percussionist at UTSC! I grew up in New York City and went to a well-known performing arts high school for music. When choosing between where I wanted to go for school, I was stuck between UTSC and another school in Boston but ultimately decided to go here because UTSC had music ensembles (the other school did not). In middle school, I was heavily influenced by my band teacher and wanted to pursue music professionally as a career. Growing up in a nonmusical family, knowledge about the field and its programs were not readily accessible to me and I had to do a ton of my own research.

This website would’ve been extraordinarily helpful in my search and is a great resource for Ontario students who want to pursue music but don’t know where to start.
