Certificate in Carillon Studies
Carleton University, OttawaThe Music programs at Carleton provide a solid grounding in the study and performance of various instruments and genres of music. Subjects of study include the practice, analysis and history of European classical music from the Middle Ages to the present, as well as Canadian music, computer music, composition, ethnomusicology, jazz, popular music, and gender studies. One of the unique things about Carleton’s Bachelor of Music program is that it is possible for students to undertake performance studies in jazz, classical, musical theatre, popular music idioms, or traditional musics. In addition, Carleton is the only university in Canada to offer a performance program in carillon studies. All music students (both BMus and BA) have opportunities to study the theory and analysis of jazz, classical, and popular styles, as well as a range of non-western musical traditions. Music admits a small number of students to the BMus program each year who receive personal attention from highly qualified faculty, internationally distinguished and recognized for their achievements in teaching and research. While at Carleton, students may enroll in a cooperative practicum course for credit, gaining valuable hands-on work experience in Ottawa’s vibrant artistic and cultural community. Media CommunicationsBA in Media CommunicationsUniversity of Guelph-Humber, TorontoForget what you think you know about media.

Yes, today’s media is what you listen to, watch, read, scroll and interact with—and our program will teach you to create on all of today’s platforms. But media in the 21st century transcends traditional and even new technologies. It’s the lifeblood of organizations from governments to charities to multinational corporations to local businesses. It’s how they interact with audiences, influence opinion, win elections, sell products and—as it always has—help people learn about and live in the world.

Media and Communication Studies will prepare you for this world with a comprehensive education in the how of media—how to write, record, shoot, design and create content. But you’ll also learn the whys behind the hows: why ethics are important. Why objective reporting is a cornerstone of democracy. Why social media is so influential—and so controversial. And why “boring” stuff like regulations, copyright and privacy is important.

You’ll acquire the tools you need to carve out your unique place in this exciting landscape.

English Literature, Media, and Writing.Laurentian UniversityFrom novels, films, and essays to graphic novels, video games, and digital media, students in Laurentian University’s English Literature, Media, and Writing program read widely, learning how imaginative and persuasive writing convinces us that the worlds it depicts could be real and that the claims it makes are true. Studying in small classes, our students develop the skills necessary to think critically about what they read and watch, becoming practiced in grasping and explaining how different forms of writing convey complex ideas and information in sophisticated ways. Provoked by the real-world questions and problems they encounter in what they read, our students work closely with faculty members to develop and refine their writing skills in diverse media, creating imaginative and research-informed responses to these concerns.

The English Literature, Media, and Writing program offers students composition-focused courses in science and health communication, creative writing, environmental communication, and documentary filmmaking. Alongside these, students may take courses to study children’s literature, detective fiction, postcolonial studies, Romantic literature, and early modern drama. Students interested in editing and publishing may volunteer for Sulphur, a literary journal edited and published by the students of the English Arts Society. Each year, student excellence in literary criticism, filmmaking, professional communication, and creative writing is celebrated through various awards and public events.

Integrated MediaOCAD UniversityIntegrated Media is an innovative digital and time-based area that encourages an interdisciplinary exploration of media practices. Students are asked to question how they position themselves in the world in relation to technology.

“As I see it, technology has built the house in which we all live. The house is continually being extended and remodelled. More and more of human life takes place within its walls, so that today there is hardly any human activity that does not occur within this house.

All are affected by the design of the house, by the division of its space, by the location of its doors and walls. Compared to people in earlier times, we rarely have a chance to live outside this house. And the house is still changing; it is still being built as well as being demolished.” – Dr. Ursula Franklin, The Real World of Technology

The Integrated Media program examines the role that technology plays in our culture and emphasizes our need for critical engagement.
Students are exposed to a wide range of media practices that include:
“film video robotics electronics performance web installation interactivity animation audio.”

Students are exposed to a wide range of media practices that include film, video, robotics, electronics, performance, web, installation, interactivity, animation and audio.

Students graduate from the program as independent thinkers and doers. Our graduates have gone on to careers as media artists, curators and theorists, and practitioners in the film and television industries, as well as to graduate schools and international and local residency programs.

Audition requirements for the Bachelor Music: Contemporary Vocal and Instrumental Genres, and the Bachelor of Music: Sonic Arts & Digital Production will be available here

Classical:
To audition for the Bachelor of Music program, you must prepare a 15-minute program of two or three works of contrasting styles/periods that you will perform at an in-person or recorded audition. Some instruments may also require you to perform some technical patterns (e.g., scales or arpeggios) and may also ask you to sight-read (or play a brand-new piece).
Through your audition, you will need to demonstrate your abilities on one primary instrument. We will be assessing your technical and musical abilities as well as your ability to interpret different types of pieces or songs.

Contemporary:
This stream is for musicians with an interest in performing in any contemporary genre, such as musical theatre, jazz, pop, rock, or country/folk, among others. You may be a singer/songwriter, musical theatre singer or pit musician, rock/pop musician, or a multi-genre musician.
We want you to show us whatever represents your experience and ability best. Click on the button to learn more about the audition requirements. This audition has 2 components: repertoire and technique. The repertoire guidelines are meant to provide some choice and structure to help you showcase the breadth of your artistic abilities. We have provided some choice in your repertoire selection, since we know that people learn and perform music using different tools and approaches. The technical component is meant to assess your vocal or instrumental facility.

Sonic Arts Production:
This stream is for students interested in sound design, music-based performance art, and/or digital music creation, production, recording, and composition across all genres (including beat–, sample–, and loop–based music) . These requirements are meant to help you showcase your artistic ideas and technical abilities with various digital tools.  While some students applying to this stream may play a standard instrument, we expect that some applicants may not play a traditional acoustic instrument and will instead use a computer as their primary means of creating sound.
Please prepare the following for your application:
Three works of your choosing that show off your creative ability. These may be performances or compositions (or a combination of both) and can be audio or video recordings of:
music you have written such as an original song, soundtrack, beat, or composition;
sound design for radio, or stage theatre;
field recordings;
a cover, arrangement, remix, or other reinterpretation of someone else’s music;
a recording that you have mixed, engineered, or otherwise contributed to (be sure to indicate your role)
These may be live-performed, submitted as a recording, or submitted in a common file format (e.g., MusicXML, .mp3, YouTube link, etc.). We may contact you during the admission process for another format or more documentation if we want to see more detail about your creative process.
A personal statement that details your inspiration and creation process for each piece, as well as your desired learning structure at Queen’s (i.e. what instrument(s) and genre(s) you are most proficient in as well as other areas you would like to learn). An online form will be provided for this component which you will fill in before your audition.

The Band of the Royal Military College of CanadaRoyal Military College of CanadaThe Band of the Royal Military College of Canada was founded in 1953. Starting as a Pipes and Drums Band, it has since grown to include a Brass and Reed Section, a Choir, and a section of Highland Dancers. The RMC Band is now one of the largest voluntary bands in the Canadian Forces.

Professional military musicians provide most of the musical instruction to the Cadets. Much of the Band organization and administration is carried out by Officer Cadets in their third and fourth years; the Cadet Wing Band Officer, his deputy, five section heads and a service and support officer are all under the guidance of the Band Officer and Bandmaster.

The RMC Band plays a very active and important roll in the College life, providing the music for all parades and military functions. The Band has gained wide popularity through its participation in various public performances, shows, and parades such as the Royal Roads 75th Anniversary in Victoria BC, the annual charity “Concert in Scarlets”, an appearance on Canada AM and various other performances in our immediate geographical area. The Band has also helped reinforce the College’s proud reputation across North America by travelling to places such as the United States Military Academy at West Point and the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis.

In addition to carrying the normal heavy course load of full-time university programs and military athletics, the Officer Cadets in the Band devote many free hours to practices and rehearsals. Through their continued efforts and talents, they are directly responsible for the Band’s solid musical reputation.
Enrolment/recruitment is carried out by contacting the local Canadian Forces While not specifically a program, the RMCC Band is of high reputation, quality, and standing. Those who wish to enrol in the RMCC can easily be part of this band if they please!
